Islam & Science
The meaning of science ('ilm) in the in the Islamic intellectual tradition has a wide meaning for it encompasses the religious (e.g fiqh, hadith), the rational (e.g, logic, mathematics) and natural or physical sciences (e.g, medicine, astronomy). Al-Ghazali divided the sciences into two basic divisions, namely, the intellectual or rational sciences are those sciences that we acquire from our thinking and experience in the world, whereas the religious or revealed sciences are those that we acquire fro the guidance and information contained in or derived from the Quran and Sunnah. But ultimately all useful are religious since Allah is the source of knowledge and we are commanded to acquire knowledge about the world as a means of appreciating the wisdom and mercy of Allah.
The concept of Islamic science is being discussed by many Muslim thinkers and academicians because they now realize that the study of the natural sciences by Muslim have to be undertaken in a way that is in accord with the Islamic Worldview, i.e undertaken within meta -scientific framework of basic assumptions about man nature and ultimate reality that are in the line with the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. Since science is not value-free. Muslim scientists obviously cannot go uncritically doing a science (i.e modern science) which grew out of the cultural context of the west and imbued with their assumptions about the world, man and ultimate reality, which is geared with their purpose. Western philosophers of science themselves, such as Paul Fayeraband and Thomas Kuhn have shown that western, modern science is imbued with the cultural values of the West, and so that means that (1) modern science is not value free, (2) it is not universal relevance and that (3) other cultures could have their respective distinct ways of doing science according to their respective value-systems, and that they should be allowed to do so. For Muslims, this means that we could should revive and rearticulate the philosophy and practice of the Islamic science as a science that is thoroughly imbued with Islamic values and directed to serving Islam and Muslim in the contemporary world.
